Winter without Christmas

I have realised this morning that I am living in Narnia. Perpetual winter with no Christmas.

It was the first official day of winter yesterday and the temperatures have come plummeting down. I think it is because of the very clear skies. It is beautifully sunny with clear blue skies during the day, but this means that the night-time temperatures get very cold - minus 5 last night with lower forecast for tonight.

I am not sure that I would notice this as much as I do if I a) had a car and b) had heating.

Not having a car means standing around at bus stops and walking to and fro Canberra central bus station. I had already invested in a woollen hat ( a very tasteful teal angora affair that I picked up in a market in Melbourne. How cosmopolitan.) but I am now pressurising myself to finish knitting the scarf, which has gone from 'something to do in the evening to keep my hands occupied' to 'something I really need finished now'.

The apartment only has one blowing air heater - which is actually an air conditioner that you can turn up. This means that when I wake up in the morning the apartment is absolutely freezing and it takes an act of will to get out of bed. I thought I knew what living in the cold was like (for goodness sake we live in Aberdeenshire without central heating) but that is bliss compared to here at the moment.

However, it  is very beautiful because of the clear blue skies all the time. And there are still parrots and cockatoos in the trees. Admittedly huddled together a bit and looking like they are reconsidering their accommodation, but still providing beautiful bursts of colour. And the holly has come out as well - again, confusing me and setting off an instinctive hunt for wrapping paper and baubles.
